Honey (Madhu) is described as having sweet and astringent tastes with cold potency and sweet post-digestive effect. It is dry, light, and has the unique quality of being Yogavahi — it enhances and carries the properties of whatever substance it is combined with. Madhu (Vadara = बदर) is the collective term for the sweet substance produced by different species of bees. The names and synonyms listed include Makshika, Kshaudra, Saradha, and several others related to bee types. Madhu is classified into eight varieties (Ashtavidha Madhu) based on the type of bee that produces it.
